"Merci, merci," a relieved Lyn Evans, LHC's project leader, thanked the applauding
physicists and engineers just before 10:30 local time on 10th September 2008 morning,
physicists successfully circulated the first protons around the 27-kilometer ring of the Large
Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN outside of Geneva, Switzerland.
This was the day and moment scientists in CERN were waiting after a decade long hard
work at this Swiss-French border. This is a 27-kilometer ring which will be used to accelerate
the atomic particles called "protons" and collide each other. The intention of this experiment
is that scientists are hopeful of getting more information about much eluding particles called
"BOSONS", theretically put forward by Mr. Higgs. So these particles are famously called as
"HIGGS BOSONS". Remember that the particle BOSON also has Indian tinge. These sub-nuclear particles follow some rules in statistics put forwarded by S.N.Bose. So in turn u can call these as BOSE particles too. Actually we physicists are more familiar with this kind of
naming.
Why is HIGGs BOSON important ???. Theory says that HIGGS bosons are responsible for
the MASS of the any particles. So in this Large Hadran Collider, using superconducting
magnets, bunches of protons will be accelerated to nearly the speed of light — and collide
them at energies of 7 teraelectronvolts (trillion electronvolts), hopeful of generate super-
heavy and unseen particles until now. Hopeful of getting some information about the existence of BOSONs in reality.
As the editor of the NATURE magazine puts this as " Oxygen of Publicity". I feel this experiment has attracted attention of the public to a greater extent with all sort of gossips from the media. I guess this experiment has drawn attention of the public even more than the first time space walk by Astronauts. In a way it is good because this is a new stuff for common public. Probably a strange topic too. May be public wanted some 'new and exciting' news to hear rather than hearing everyday's bombing, floods, movies.
Guys, hold your breath. On September 10th, scientists just tested the first proton beam. It circulated the 27km accelerator. This was a great moment for all those who are working there. They did not try to collide the proton beam. It is like testing a toy or electronic gadget for the first time after you buy it.This kind of experiment cannot be done in daily basis. Because there are lot of things which are MUST in the list. For example : Proton beam must be focused while moving fast. This depends on proper working of some 10000 superconducting magnets made of Niobium-Titanium alloy. (Focusing cannot be done using simple optics as with the light). These magnets needs to be kept at Liquid Helium temperature ( Say -271C, i.e 1.9kelvin) carrying a current of 10000amps. (we in the laboratory work in the ranges of 1-3amps at 25C or 273kelvin). The magnets carry this enormous load without generating heat, but if a section of the niobium–titanium rises above its operating temperature it can lead to a catastrophic failure known as a 'quench'.
Here are some of the general information about this Large Hadron Collider [http://www.nature.com/news/specials/lhc/index.html]:
1. This is a US$4.1 billion proton smasher.
2. Under optimum operating conditions, this collider or accelerator will have protons beam traveling in near speed of light, thus achieving an energy about 5 teraelectronvolts[1 TeV: about the energy of motion of a flying mosquito].
3. This is a 27-kilometer ring about 100meters below the earth's surface.
By now you might be thinking that physicist or in general scientists scratch their heads with crazy questions to answer ??. Well, I will say NO. After all, we should try to understand the great NATURE at our hand. Anyway, September 10th was exciting day for me.
Guys, Comments are welcome ...

LHC :Large Hadron Collider coming soon
guys, you might have heard about the BIG BANG experiment (this is what general public say..) recently held ?. What is it all about ?? please check my blog over the weekend. i will provide some information about what i understood...
