After staying in a quiet and sleeping city of Halle in Germany, I came down to Bangalore, India on December 25th night. I travelled through the city traffic in an auto and I am amazed to see how thing have changed!! From Bad to worse ( at times).
I sat in the auto, this auto driver was smoking and even after I sat down, he continued driving with cigarette in his hand and smoking! This was striking to me and I took enough courage to ask him “what sir, do you smoke when a passenger/customer is sitting in your auto and you drive??? “. He probably did not expect this from me. But then he replied in such a way it does not matter to him whether a passenger is there or not!! That really pissed me off! I but still continued my journey to the city in his auto, To my luck, he through his half burnt cigarette outside (Of course to the road!!) I did not talk to him after that. He was driving crazy!!! No Traffic rules... Of course in Bangalore, we cannot tell/convince any traffic rules to these auto drivers. Till my destination, I did not utter a single word to him, but he was driving crazy!!! I stopped him in my destination point and gave him money and told him please do not smoke in future when a passenger is inside your auto !! He said “OK SIR”. But that expression on his face told me the complete story. It really did not matter to him!
In fact while travelling in his auto I was observing outside. There are new pavements, nearby small gardens, sitting benches ( I don’t know who is gonna sit in these roadside benches when you have so much polluted air around ) and murals. It was fascinating to see the wall paintings depicting the richness of Karnataka. That was wonderful to see. (I will take pictures of them and will post them in my next blog). Looks like the city developments are going in right direction. But who is going to teach CIVIC SENSE to people?? Will that be taught in schools or it should come naturally to us?
Am I asking/expecting more ??
